The work of re-establishing the viable self-sustaining Baltic sturgeon population in Estonia is gaining momentum and volume. Wildlife Estonia, Forest management Centre of Estonia and Institute Natural Resources Finland will carry out the project "Restoration of the Baltic Sea sturgeon population in Estonian waters" with the acronyme LIFE Baltic Sturgeon for five years. The main task is to release approximately 100,000 young sturgeons in the Narva and Pärnu rivers every year. Stocking material will be obtained from Germany from the breedstock managed by the Aquaculture and Fisheries Research Center of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The fate of different sturgeon species is under special attention in Europe. The Baltic Sea Marine Environment Protection Commission (also the Helsinki Commission and HELCOM), which unites the countries of the Baltic Sea, has adopted an action plan for the protection of Baltic Sea sturgeon in 2019, which sets the goal of restoring the Atlantic sturgeon population in the Baltic Sea. The implementation of the project helps to achieve the goals by carrying out activities in Estonia. |
